United Way Hosts "Bridges Out of Poverty"
COLUMBIA - At 8 a.m. Friday morning, the Heart of Missouri United Way will kick off the "Bridges Out of Poverty" Workshop. The event is being held at the Missouri Theatre on Ninth Street until 4 p.m.
Teachers in the Columbia Public School District are dealing with children in poverty like other school districts across the country. Columbia Public Schools has seen a ten percent increase in students qualifying for free and reduced lunch over the past seven years.
In order to come to the event, the United Way recommended people get a workbook and Dr. Ruby Payne's book "Bridges Out of Poverty."The costs of those two things is $25.
The United Way says CPS picked up the tab for the first 200 teachers that registered for this event. State Farm picked up the tab for the last 50 teachers.
State Farm and Commerce Bank are sponsoring the event as well. On May 26, 2011, Heart of Missouri United Way and KOMU teamed up to raise more than $1.3 million for the victims of the Joplin tornado.
