MONTGOMERY CITY - The Montgomery County Prosecutor filed charges Thursday in a kidnapping case that left a 15-year-old girl missing overnight Tuesday and locked down Montgomery County R-2 Schools for about an hour on Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old Robert Bethel has been charged with the kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend, 15-year-old Amy Jordan. He has also been charged with armed criminal action and violation of an order of protection.

On Wednesday, KOMU 8 News learned that Montgomery R-2 Schools went on lockdown for about an hour in connection with the case, as Bethel had allegedly made threats to head to schools armed after he returned Jordan to her mother's home in Montgomery City.

According to a probable cause statement, a Montgomery City police officer responded to a call from Jordan's mother after 4 p.m. Tuesday, worried that her daughter had not come after getting off the school bus.

Jordan was missing until Bethel returned her home safely around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, police said. According to the statement, police interviewed Jordan and determined that Bethel had abducted her against her will. Jordan told police that Bethel pointed a .22 caliber revolver at her, and threatened to kill her and himself if she did not get in his truck.

Jordan also told police that during the nearly 20 hour period of the abduction, Bethel repeatedly threatened to kill her if she did not do what he told her. Jordan told police that at one point during the abduction, she tried to get a hold of the revolver. In a scuffle over the gun, the revolver discharged and put a bullet into the dashboard of Bethel's truck.

In the statement, police said Bethel violated an ex parte order of child protection that was filed by Jordan's mother. A Montgomery County sheriff's deputy served the order to Bethel on Dec. 13.
