COLUMBIA - With only one dissenting vote, the Columbia Public School Board has voted "yes" to change school schedules for high school students and elementary school students.

High school students will start the day at 9 a.m. and end at 4:05 p.m. Students from Lee, Midway Heights, New Haven, Ridgeway and Benton, Rock Bridge, and Two Mile Prairie elementary schools will start the day at 7:40 a.m. and ending at 2:40 p.m. These schools have different schedules because the schools have the longest elementary school runs.

Other elementary schools will start at 8:20 a.m. and end at 3:20 p.m. These new times will change for the next school year.

At the previous school board meeting, school board members brought up sleep studies performed on teens as support for the new schedule, saying teens need more sleep. One sophomore student at Rock Bridge High School agrees.

"When the 7:20 start time was proposed back in January everybody was outraged and now that the 9 o'clock start time is proposed everyone is outraged again," said Jilly Dos Santos. "But I think when you look at the facts, you can see that the 9 a.m. start time is far more flexible and it's just far more healthy for students."

While all but one member approved the decision, several members expressed their conflictions over the change. One member even said all other arguments and ideas had good points as well.

However, after KOMU 8 News tweeted about the schedule changes, many followers replied to the tweet--and most tweets were not in favor of the change.
