UPDATE: CPD arrest suspect in attempted abduction
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Police Department arrested Anthony Todd Rowell for the attempted abduction on Greenwood Avenue Thursday, Jan. 25.
Police said in a news release, Rowell of Holts Summit, Mo. was arrested on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. in Fulton.
Rowell was positively identified by the 27-year-old victim as the man who tried to abduct her. He also owned a vehicle matching the description provided by the victim.
A 27-year-old woman said she was walking alone on Greenwood Ave. when a minivan pulled up alongside her. The driver spoke to the woman, grabbed her by her hair and pulled her toward his window.
She was able to break away from him and run to safety. Authorities responded to the incident around 11 p.m.
Rowell faces charges of Felonious Restraint, Second Degree Kidnapping and Misdemeanor Fourth Degree Assault.
According to court documents, Rowell works as an Uber driver. It's not clear if he was working at the time of the incident.
CPD said being vigilant is the best way to protect yourself. It also recommends:
- Avoid walking alone at night
- Stay in well-lit areas away from alleys, bushes, and entryways
Be aware of your surroundings -- do not wear headphones or be distracted by electronics
If a driver stops to ask you a question, stand at least two and half arm lengths away from the vehicle, facing the opposite direction of the car
Memorize the license plate number and report it to law enforcement immediately
If you are followed by someone on foot or in a car, cross the street,change directions and go to a lighted home or public area to call lawenforcement
