UPDATE: Crash on Highway 54 Kills One, Seriously Injures Another

JEFFERSON CITY - One person is dead and another is seriously injured after an accident on Highway 54 Wednesday night.

At 9:57 p.m., a Ford Ranger pickup truck was driving the wrong way on Highway 54 and struck a Saturn Ion.

According to a press release from the Jefferson City Police Department, the Saturn Ion driver, 19-year-old Chelsea Fredrickson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, Jasper Richmond, was flown to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries.

Neither Fredrickson nor Richmond were wearing seatbelts.

The pickup truck driver, Dennis Leporin, was taken to a local hospital for moderate injuries.

The Jefferson City Police Department's Traffic Section is currently investigating the crash. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.
