UPDATE: Jury Selection for Shelley Richter Trial Begins
JEFFERSON CITY - The jury selection for Shelley Richter's trial began Monday at 9 a.m. at the Cole County Courthouse in Jefferson City. After two years of delays, courtroom officials said they expect her trial to start Monday afternoon.
Richter is accused of hitting and shaking seven-month-old Lane Schaefer in 2010. Prosecutors have charged Richter with child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. She could face more than 20 years in prison, with the child abuse charge punishable with up to 15 years and endangering the welfare of a child charge punishable by up to seven years in prison.
Lane Schaefer, now three years old, is permanently blind and has trouble speaking and walking. KOMU 8 News spoke with Schaefer's aunt last February who said these issues stemmed from Richter's actions.
KOMU 8 News spoke with some of Richter's family members Monday who said they were appalled someone could accuse Richter of causing this. They refused to comment further.
