UPDATE: Officers Respond to False Report of Robbery at Downtown Pharmacy
COLUMBIA - Columbia police officers arrested 29-year-old Cole Thomas of Columbia for a robbery outside of Walgreen's at Broadway and Providence Road Monday morning.
Around 8:23 Monday morning, officers were dispatched to Walgreen's Pharmacy on East Broadway for a report of a strong arm robbery.
The victim, 47-year-old Sylvia Lewis reported she had her purse forcibly taken by a white male wearing a stocking cap and mask while she was in the Walgreen's parking lot.
While speaking with the victim officers obtained information that led them to believe she knew the suspect. After interviewing her it was learned that the robbery was staged so that after she completed refilling her prescription for pain medication Thomas would rob her, making it possible for her to file a police report and get a replacement prescription.
The two admitted to conspiring to report the robbery and that the purpose was to obtain more perscription medication that they could then illegally sell.
Both Thomas and Lewis were arrested. Lewis was arrested for filing a false police report and distribution of a controlled substance within 2000 feet of a school. Thomas was arrested for filing a false police report, felony possession of a controlled substance and a municipal warrant for stealing.
