UPDATE: Suspect in gunfire exchange killed himself, previously shot at trooper
BOONE COUNTY - The Missouri Highway Patrol has identified the person at the center of a death investigation north of Columbia as Troy Bateman, 35, from Marshall.
Bateman was identified last week as the suspect in an incident in which he allegedly fired a gun at a state trooper in Saline County.
According to the Highway Patrol, the Columbia Police Department asked it to conduct a death investigation in the area of Oakland Gravel road and Alfalfa Drive Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities said Columbia officers pulled over a car for a traffic stop, at which point two women got out of the car. Police said a man, later identified as Bateman, fired a gunshot from inside the car, and two officers returned fire.
An autopsy by the the Boone County Medical Examiner Office Bateman revealed Bateman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Other than the deceased man, there were no other injuries reported. The state patrol's division of drug and crime control continues to investigate.
