UPDATE- Woman Suffers Life-Threatening Burns From Apartment Fire
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Fire Department released the name of the occupant in the residential structure fire at Forest Village Apartments. Medical crews are still treating Albina Lewis, 54, for substantial burn injuries at the University Hospital's George Peak Burn Unit.
Columbia Fire Investigators said the fire started on or around the living room sofa. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire. Officials said is is unknown what, if any, role smoke alarms played in notifying Lewis.
The Columbia Fire Department arrived on the scene of a fire at 7:46 p.m. Wednesday. It took firefighters 24 minutes to put out the fire. Fire EMT's treated Lewis on the scene and transported her to burn unit. Officials said her injuries are considered life threatening. Medical staff is treating the woman as a trauma alert burn patient.
Five units in addition to Lewis' unit sustained minor smoke damage. The damage to the apartment is estimated $50,000.
Crews built the apartment complex before fire sprinklers were required.
