Work to fix an expansion joint in the right lane of the eastbound I-70 bridge over the Missouri River near Rocheport is done.
Work will now switch to the left lane to repair another expansion joint.
MoDOT officials had originally planned to reopen the bridge by Thursday. However, they decided to replace the expansion joint in the left lane of the eastbound bridge as well, citing safety precautions. That work will close the left lane of the bridge around the clock until approximately Saturday afternoon.
MoDOT officials say it’s possible crews will have to close both lanes of the bridge for a brief period overnight to complete the repairs. Message boards will notify motorists of the closure and signs will mark the detour route.
The bridge was built in 1960 and carries an average of 17,000 vehicles a day, 24 percent of which is truck traffic.
The last repairs came in 1993. According to MoDOT, it is scheduled to be painted and rehabilitated in either late 2018 or early 2019. Replacing expansion joints is part of the future repair package.
BOONE COUNTY – The I-70 bridge over the Missouri River near Rocheport will be down to one lane until Wednesday or Thursday.
MoDOT told KOMU that the Missouri Department of Transportation crews are making emergency repairs to an expansion joint on the bridge to allow the bridge to expand and contract.
Motorists should expect heavy congestion and traffic delays on the bridge for the next several days, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
The speed limit on and near the bridge is reduced to 45 mph while the work takes place.
MoDOT advises drivers to alter their travel times or consider taking alternate routes around the bridge, such us Routes 50 and 36.
Wear and tear on the aging bridge is the cause for the expansion joint problem, MoDOT officials said.
MoDOT officials added that the westbound side of the bridge is not affected by the work, and traffic should move normally.
