USDA offers farmers reimbursement for organic certification
COLUMBIA - The Missouri Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that funding is available to help Missouri farmers and food processors in getting organic certifications.
The USDA Organic Certification Cost Share Program provides as much as 75% for the certification expenses, up to $750.
The USDA's website lists the following benefits to farmers who receive organic certification:
- Receive premium prices for their products
- Access local, regional, and international markets
- Protect natural resources
- Support local economies
- Access additional funding and technical assistance programs
Missouri received more than $127,000 in program funds to reimburse producers.
For farmers to participate in the program, businesses must obtain or renew their certifications, complete an application and document certification costs through October 1, 2014 through September 30, 2015.
