COLUMBIA - Two Truman VA Hospital clinicians are now in Puerto Rico to assist in providing care to people affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Adam Huckfeldt, a nursing assistant in Truman VA's intensive care unit, and Dr. Lana Zerrer, the chief of staff, will be at a medical shelter in Puerto Rico for two weeks. This particular facility has already treated nearly 6,000 affected individuals.

The official death toll stands at 55, but San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz told CNN the actual number of dead is closer to 500.

This is Huckfeldt's second deployment to Puerto Rico.

"I am forever changed by what we did for the people of Puerto Rico - especially for those American veterans," Huckfeldt said in a press release. "I am proud to say that I represented Truman VA with honor and the highest standards of excellence."

Huckfeldt said that because it was one of the most "amazing and rewarding" things he had ever done, it was easy for him to volunteer for a second deployment.
