Vandals Damage 22 Tombstones at Church Cemetery
DUTZOW, Mo. (AP) -- The pastor of an eastern Missouri church where nearly two dozen tombstones have been damaged in the past two months says the crime is more than a prank. The Washington Missourian reports that 22 tombstones have been pushed over and, in some cases, broken into pieces, at the cemetery at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Dutzow (Duht-zoh).
The Rev. Gene Robertson says vandals need to understand that in the Catholic tradition, loved ones are buried in sacred ground. He says damaging that ground destroys their peace.
Warren County authorities are making more frequent rounds, but no arrests have been made.
