Vandals Damage Local Cemetery
Vandals damaged more than 50 tombstones at Goshen Cemetery. The Boone County Sheriff's Department says the vandalism happened sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
The Goshen Primitive Baptist Church owns the cemetery. Church officials say the damage is costing the church about 2 thousand dollars.
Harold Nichols, a cemetery volunteer, says he can't believe someone would vandalize a cemetery.
"I can't imagine anybody doing something like that to a cemetery. That's beyond my imagination," Nichols said.
Nichols says he and four others began fixing the tombstones today.
Nichols also says there are about 900 tombstones in the cemetery, and the oldest one dates back to 1838.
So far the sheriff's department has no leads, but it's asking for the public's help.
"Law enforcement is a partnership with the community. Many times we're able to solve crimes because of the cooperation that we get from the community at large," Tom O'Sullivan, Boone County Sheriff's Detective said.
If you have any information regarding the vandalism, deputies ask that you call 875-TIPS.
