Volleyball Cougars Defeat Hannibal-LaGrange
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Cougar volleyball team picked up its 133 consecutive regular season conference win Tuesday night, downing American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Hannibal-LaGrange University by scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-3.
The wins push the Cougars, who are the third-ranked team in the NAIA, to 23-2 on the season and 11-0 in AMC play.
Vesna Trivunovic led the way with nine kills. Paula Ferreira added 27 assists, five kills and four digs. The Cougars finished the night with a total of eight service aces, including five from Ferreira. Columbia hit 0.530 for the match compared to the Trojans who ended with more hitting errors than they did kills.
Trivunovic was honored this week as the AMC Volleyball Player of the Week. She helped the Cougars to a 5-0 record last week, including a victory over No. 17 ranked Missouri Baptist University. For the week, Vesna averaged 3.6 kills per game, just over two digs per game and 12 aces.
In the most recent NAIA Top 25 that was released today, the Cougars held at No. 3 in the ranking, accumulating 611 points. The University of Texas at Brownsville remained atop the poll with a 20-0 record. Concordia University is second followed by the Cougars. Lee is fourth and Embry-Riddle University rounds out the top five.
The Cougars travel to Des Moines, Iowa this weekend for the Grandview University Invitational. On Friday, Oct. 21st they face Jamestown College at 4:00 p.m. and Graceland University at 8:00 p.m. Columbia takes on Illinois Tech University at Noon and Grandview University on Saturday, Oct. 22nd.
