COLUMBIA - The Voluntary Action Center is hosting the 29th annual Christmas Program this year. However, the deadline to sponsor a family in need of gifts and food this holiday season has been extended to Tuesday. That's because the center accepted 1,200 households and 22 aren't sponsored yet.
The center has two options if not enough sponsors support these 22 families. One of those is to not sponsor the family. Project Director Ron Schmidt says this would be unfortunate because it is too late for families to sign up for other assistant programs. Another alternative is for the center to take funds from the reserves. Schmidt says they will probably do this but are still hopeful sponsors will come through before the end of Tuesday.
