Volunteers Help Light Up the Holidays
That's why the state's ombudsman program uses volunteers like Jo Ladwig, who visits with residents at the Bluffs Nursing Home once a week.
"I like being with people and I like to feel like I am helping them," she said.
And, as Christmas approaches, the Department of Health and Senior Services wants the community to be even more involved.

Janet Marsh and Ginny Anderson, who live at the Bluffs, are glad they have friends like Joe who visit them each week.
"She has brought me spirit and happiness," said Marsh.
"They [volunteers] bring a lot of happiness, a lot of joy, very different things," added Anderson.
Ladwig said the elderly need visitors throughout the year, not just during the holidays.
