Voters Get a Lift to the Polls
COLUMBIA-Volunteers from Grass Roots Organizing, or GRO, will give voters rides to polling locations today from 8:00 a.m to 6:30 p.m. Members from the group say, it's all about encouraging folks to do their civic duty.
The Mexico based group has rallied valunteers to set up shop at their Columbia headquarters to man the phones and wait for requests.
Lily Tinker Fortel, an organizer with GRO said, "it's going to be a busy day," for the group so people should call and schedule rides early.
Fortel said GRO volunteers will ask callers what time of day they wish to be picked up.
"We try to get as close to the time they request as possible," said Fortel.
After the ride is scheduled, Fortel said GRO volunteers will call voters before they arrive, and will wait at the polling place to take riders home after they vote.
Rides will be given to voters anywhere within the city limits.
