Walking Across America

The big strides that come from small steps. Hundred of miles from home, driving an RV, but this is no vacation.

"And the next thing you know, we started having garage sales and selling everything," Lucy Della Valle said.

Nick Della Valle said, "That is our home. That RV is our home."

Nick Della Valle is a walker.

"Because it's what I can do," he said.

This former pizza parlor owner and Las Vegas poker dealer wore out 13 pairs of shoes walking cross the country.

"The policeman is the first person I meet in every town," he said. "It's their job to stop little people dressed funny walking through their town."

Nick is 4'8". Lucy is 4'. He met his wife at a little people's convention.

"You can do anything you want in life," he said. "She'll use the pillows and an extension. You might have to make some adjustments."

Adjustments that allow Lucy to drive the RV while Nick walks.

"If I was 6'2", I just don't think people would be so anxious to come up to me," he explained. "But being 4'8", they're saying, 'I wonder what he's about. And, "Is that Yoda?'"

Nick and Lucy are traveling 3,300 miles.

"One hundred miles for every year that Jesus walked the Earth," Nick added.

Nick started walking in Philadelphia and wants to eventually end up in New Mexico. The Della Valles sold their home in California because they feel America is stuck in a religious rut.

"And I really didn't feel attached to anything," Lucy said.

Nick asked, "Does anybody care? Does it matter?"

Nick tells the story of Zaccheaus at churches, schools and jails along the walk.

"Zaccheaus was a wee, little man. A wee, little man was he," said Nick. "One of the reasons why I chose to dress in garb is that we think America is getting a little off track with God. In fact, we're getting way off track."

Nick is encouraging people to use their God-given talents, even if it's putting one foot in front of the other.

"Because it's what I can do," he said.

He's not sure when or even where he's going. But Nick Della Valle says he knows precisely where he'll end up. The Della Valles are spending the winter in Kansas City.
