Walking School Bus Revs Up in Columbia
Pednet encourages biking and walking throughout Columbia, including students on their way to and from school. The seasonal program started Monday and ends June 2.
Regularly-scheduled safe walks to Columbia schools were a Pednet goal for several years. Now, the walking school bus is an option for children and adults from Grant, Russell, Ridgeway, West Boulevard and Lee elementary schools. About 20 adult volunteers are trained as "drivers" for 12 groups of kids.
"By walking to school, you can get 20-30 minutes of exercise, depending on how far it is," explained Ian Thomas, Pednet director. "But also, the kids really love it. It's a great social opportunity for them. They have a lot of fun joking and laughing."
All "drivers" receive a background check before leading the groups.
