Walkoff in 8th Gives CMU Baseball Split with Evangel
FAYETTE, MO -- Central Methodist's Neil Hansen scored a game-winning run on a walkoff walk in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Eagles split a Heart of America Athletic Conference baseball doubelheader with Evangel on Friday at Estes Field. The Eagles lost the first game 3-0 but won the second 2-1 in extra innings against the Crusaders.
Both teams will finish the four-game, weekend series on Saturday. First pitch on Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. CDT. Central Methodist trails Evangel by three games for first place in the Eastern Division with six conference games remaining .
In game one, the Crusaders scored one run in the first, third and seventh innings. CJ Garza and Nathan Ervin had a RBI hit and groundout, respectively, to score the first two runs for the visitors. Seth Bailey's sacrifice fly in the seventh ended the scoring.
Evangel's Blake McKnight earned the victory on the mound in game one. He threw a complete game, eight-hit shutout.
Central Methodist's Tyler Paule suffered the loss but pitched strongly. He went the distance, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Like the first game, the second contest turned into a pitcher's duel, this time between Evangel's Matt Myers and Central Methodist's Drew Greiwe. Neither pitcher allowed a run through the first seven innings.
Bailey, who was in the game as a pinch runner, scored from third in the top of the eigth inning on a dropped third strike.
The Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Poynter led off with a double to left center, ending Myers day on the mound. In the next at-bat, Poynter advanced to third base on a balk, setting up Hansen's heroics.
Hansen took an 0-1 pitch to left field. The ball narrowly missed Michael Jankowski's glove on a diving catch attempt, allowing Poynter to tie the game and Hansen to reach third in a standup triple.
After two intentional walks, Matt Gessner induced a bases-loaded walk on four pitches, scoring Hansen to end the game.
Greiwe got the win for the home team on the mound. He pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run on four hits while fanning nine.
Mason Holliday was tagged with the defeat. He allowed one earned run on one hit without recording an out out of the bullpen. Myers got a no-decision, pitching seven and one-third innings and allowing one earned run on four hits.
