UPDATE: Suspect in fatal Sedalia stabbing turns himself in
SEDALIA - The man suspected in the stabbing death of a woman turned himself in to authorities on Sunday, according to the Sedalia Police Department.
A post on the department's Facebook page said Justin K. Lewis is at the Pettis County Jail on suspicion of murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Charges for the same crimes have been filed by the Pettis County prosecutor's office.
Police had been looking for Lewis in connection to the death of Heather McClellan, who died on Jan. 14 after someone assaulted her.
Court documents said Lewis was the one who stabbed McClellan numerous times and cut her throat. A witness said he had let McClellan stay at his apartment, and on January 14 Lewis and another man, identified as "CW," came by.
At one point, Lewis and McClellan went into the kitchen, and minutes later the witness said he heard McClellan say, "No, No, No," followed by a crash. When the witness and CW went into the kitchen, he said he saw McClellan on the floor surrounded by blood, Lewis standing over her. At that point, CW reportedly grabbed Lewis and the two left the apartment.
McClellan later died of her injuries at a hospital.
According to court documents, police later found messages on Lewis' Facebook account asking about rides out of Sedalia. The investigation also turned up items belonging to Lewis, including a large knife and shoes with what appeared to be blood spattered on them.
