Wealthy donors pump $2M to Missouri candidates in last blitz
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — Wealthy donors gave about $2 million to candidates on the final day of unlimited political giving in Missouri.
An Associated Press analysis shows donors gave roughly $2 million to state candidates in a last-minute blitz on Wednesday.
Close to $1.6 million went to Republican Gov.-elect Eric Greitens. Members of the wealthy Humphreys family wrote the next governor two checks of $500,000 each.
Wednesday was the last day donors could cut six-figure checks to candidates before new voter-imposed campaign contribution limits of $2,600 per election kicked in Thursday.
Voters approved the new limits Nov. 8. That gave donors a month to continue funneling unlimited amounts of cash to political candidates before the new constitutional amendment was enacted.
Opponents filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to strike down the new limits.
