COLUMBIA - Weather canceled Monday's 25th annual Salute to Veterans Memorial Day Parade in Columbia. Hundreds of residents gathered along Broadway and were ready for a parade. Military parachute jumpers were scheduled to land on the street, but windy and unsafe conditions canceled the jumps. Spectators found out the parade was canceled from police.

Columbia resident Diane Oerly said, "We got here just in time for the police to tell us the parade was canceled."

Some parade enthusiasts traveled short distances for Monday's parade, others from several miles away.

Camdenton resident Maryellen Metzen said, "We're very disappointed because we came all the way from Camdenton to see the parade."

College student Niki Kottmann said, "I think we just decided to see what it's like and get a feel for what the holidays are like in Columbia because we haven't really experienced that yet. We were just excited for all the hype of it so just kind of sad."

A flyover that was scheduled went on as planned, but many resident were already leaving after being told the parade was canceled.

The Salute to Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony that was scheduled for immediately after the parade was also canceled.
