Weather delays bike median construction
COLUMBIA - On Monday, the City of Columbia Public Works Department announced the beginning of an upgraded bike median on College Avenue. The construction is at Ash Street and Windsor Street. But now, due to the weather, the Bike Boulevard Project is delayed.
The pedestrian refuge island will allow cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross half of the road, then wait in the median to cross the other half.
The new median is a permanent solution to issues with the previous set-up. Prior to the construction, the median consisted of plastic lane markers that would often be destroyed by drivers.
"The median is going to be safe. I'm going to be able to cross that intersection and not worry about getting hit," local cyclist Barbara DuNard said.
The project has resulted in lane restrictions on the north and south bound of College Avenue.
There is no estimate on when the project will be finished. The city will wait for better weather before continuing construction.
