Westminster Drops SLIAC Tournament Opener

HIGHLAND, IL -- Fourth-seeded Westminster College managed just four hits in dropping an 11-0 decision to top-seeded Webster University in the first game of the 2012 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championships Thursday at Glik Park.

The Blue Jays (15-22) fall into the loser's bracket and face the loser of the second game between Fontbonne University and Greenville College game Thursday evening at 8:00. Webster (29-12) scored one run in the first inning on a hit and two Westminster errors, and then broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and three Blue Jay errors.

Westminster junior Matt Mallette recorded the lone hit until the eighth inning. Senior Nick Hoag, sophomore Andy Pichler and senior Mike Young each singled in the eighth but Westminster failed to score. Webster added six runs in the home portion of the eighth to close out the scoring. Senior Mark Davidson (2-4) took the loss for Westminster with relief from freshman Tommy Bohnert, senior Gavin Magruder and senior Brandon Zucker.
