Woman Injured in Columbia Apartment Fire
COLUMBIA - A structure fire broke out at Courtyard Apartments near Stadium Boulevard and Ash Street in Columbia at approximately 2 a.m. Friday. Rescue workers transported one woman to University Hospital with minor burns as a result of the fire. One cat also died.
Neighbors reported the fire after hearing screaming coming from an apartment, and the Columbia Fire Department responded to the apartment complex. According to Battalion Chief James Weaver, the first unit arrived at the scene at approximately 2:13 a.m. Crews reported heavy flames coming from the second floor window of apartment A-6.
According to a press release from the fire department, crews put the fire out by 2:30 a.m. and contained flames to the apartment of origin. There was also smoke, heat and water damage to neighboring apartments.
The cause of the fire is still unknown as of 6 a.m. Friday. Assistant Fire Marshal Lisa Todd also investigated the fire and issued a preliminary damage estimate of $150,000.
