Woman Reunited With Son's Ashes After 40 Years
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- A Springfield woman who waited nearly 40 years to find out what happened to her son finally has her answers.
Erma Sickman held a memorial service Saturday for Steven K. Sickman, who disappeared in July 1972 in Houston. He was not identified until this March. Texas authorities determined he was the victim of serial killer Dean Corll, who killed at least 29 boys between the ages of 13 and 21.
But the horror continued for Sickman when she was told that his body had mistakenly been given to the family of another of Corll's victims, who had the body cremated.
Sickman's sister finally brought the ashes to her mother on Friday.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that she plans to have her son's ashes buried with her when she dies.
