COLUMBIA - The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services and the University of Missouri Bond Life Science Center held a memorial for AIDS victims Monday night.
There was a remembrance ceremony for those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS. The names of the victims were displayed on quilts. There were posters placed around the room informing those in attendance about the disease.
"There are 465 individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV in our region. That's a little bit of a small number compared to the total number of individuals who are living with this disease in this area," said RAIN Executive Director for Central Missouri Cale Mitchell.
Twenty-three Missourians lost their lives to HIV this year. The average number of deaths from AIDS is approximately twenty-five per year.
