Youth in Action Finishes Tenth Summer
COLUMBIA-- The Youth in Action program had it's final celebration Tuesday evening at Stephens Lake Park. Children in the program had pizza at the Gordon Shelter and received awards.
Each summer, the city of Columbia's Youth in Action program gives 12-15 year olds the opportunity to participate in community service.
This summer, the 31 children participated in 28 volunteer events all over Columbia. By the end of the summer, the children had logged more than 300 hours of community service.
This year was Muslimah Carpenter's second year in the program. "It was really fun and a lot more fun than I expected."
Muslimah's mother, Lianne Hibbert, appreciates what the program did for her daughter. "The kids have an opportunity to give back to the community. It gives them an opportunity to do selfless acts."
"12 to 15 year olds have a lot to offer the community," said Youth in Action intern Amy Sands. "It gives them an opportunity to do selfless acts."
