Youth Police Academy
"My sister was going to do it and then I just thought I'd do it with her," said Carrie. "I've always wanted to be like a police officer or in the FBI."
The groundwork for their futures in law enforcement started with a week of practical instruction.
"They get a touch of a little bit of everything," explained Sgt. Eric White. "So, if they didn't know much about what the fire department does, especially working hand in hand with the police department, hopefully an academy like this will bring that out of them."
Thanks to the popularitiy of TV shows such as "CSI," the darker side of police work drew more curious students to this year's academy.
"When I was growing up, it was CHIPS and SWATS and everybody wanted to do the uniform patrol," recalled White. "And now you see the detective side of things."
Detective work on Thursday meant finding the right way to hold a fire hose, as students learned what it takes to be a first responder and trying to make the community a better, safer place.
