The ACT: Evaluating Academic Skills
What is the ACT? The ACT is a series of tests which allows High Schools and Colleges to evaluate the skills mastered by a student for the purpose of academic advising, counseling, and admission decisions.
How do High Schools use the results? Academic Advising Academic Counseling Evaluating the effectiveness of instruction Identifying students who need special help with certain subject areas or academic skills Planning changes and improvements in the curriculum
How do Colleges use the results? Admission Decisions Course Placement Academic Advising Scholarships and Loans Description of the ACT English: Measures standard written English and rhetorical skills Mathematics: Measuring mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken up to the beginning of Grade 12 Reading: Measures reading comprehension Science: Measures the interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in the natural sciences. Optional Writing: Measures writing skills emphasized in high school English classes and in entry-level college composition courses.
Tips for Taking the ACT Carefully read all of the instructions and directions. Read each question carefully. Pace yourself. Use a soft lead No. 2 pencil with a good eraser. Answer the easy questions first, then go back and answer the more difficult ones. Answer every question. Review your work. Mark your answers neatly. Do not mark or alter any ovals on a test after time has been called – you will be disqualified from the exam
