Flash Flood Safety
April 2 2009

Monitor your weather radio and local media for weather information in advance of storms.

Stay away from flood-prone areas and roadways.  If flash flooding occurs, get to higher ground.

Avoid flooded areas, or those with rapid water flow.

DO not attempt to cross flowing water.  It takes only 6 inches of flowing water to sweep a person off their feet and 2 feet to float an automobile away.

Do not allow children to play near high water, ditches, or storm drains.

Flooded roadways can have significant damage hidden by the flood waters.  NEVER drive into flood waters.

Flooded waters can be difficult to see at night and during heavy rainfall.

In 2008, the Columbia Fire Department responded to 9 water rescue calls.
