JEFFERSON CITY - With more than nine percent of Missourians unemployed, the Missouri Department of Economic Development said unemployment could be decreasing.

October is now the second straight month unemployment has decreased, with the unemployment rate falling to 9.3 percent.

"We're seeing a possible stabilization," said John Fougere of the Missouri Department of Economic Development. "We've now had five consecutive months where the unemployment rate in the state of Missouri has been in the neighborhood of 9.3 or 9. percent which suggests some level of stabilization."

Denisha Holmes disagrees and says she hasn't seen a difference. Denisha, a victim of the Chrysler lay offs, has been out of a job for six months. She moved from Kansas City to Jefferson City to live with her father, Raymond Holmes, in hopes of finding a job. She moved to Mid-Missouri two months ago, and so far has not had much luck.

"I've been doing the interviews, looking for jobs," said Holmes. "I've had to start over."

Holmes said these past few months have been hard while she tries to keep up on bills, food, and most important, medical bills. Holmes suffers from chronic seizures and has no medical insurance. She said her medical bills have been very high during her unemployment.

"It's very depressing," said Holmes. "Very depressing."

Holmes has visited the Workforce Development Office and has tried to find a job through the Missouri Career Center. She said to her it doesn't seem like the economy is getting any better cause she and many others still can't find a job.

Jessica Calvin, a security employee at the Missouri Career Center, says she doesn't think the decrease in unemployment is significant.

"I can't see it," said Calvin. "The classifieds are thinner than I've seen. There's just a lot of people out of work."

Fougere knows the impact hasn't been significant. Only 4,000 jobs have returned, but he still says the department is optimistic and working hard.

"We're not going to stop until we can find a job for every Missourian...who wants to be working," said Fougere.

With a steady and stabilizing Missouri economy, Fougere said he hopes Missouri will attract more out of state businesses.
