COLUMBIA - Hundreds of mid-Missourians celebrated National Skateboarding Day on Saturday.
It's not just a day for skateboarding pros to show off their skills. Beginners also got a chance to prove themselves at Columbia Skate Park on Go Skateboarding Day.
"I went down that hill, and it's called riding into the waves," Brady Whelihan, a six-year-old skateboarding beginner, said.
Brady said he's only been skating for six months, but he's not afraid of trying new tricks.
"I think I'm trying for that hill, to go up and jump," he said.
Skateboarding might be a game just for fun to many kids, but some of them are pretty serious about skateboarding.
"I probably wanna be a pro when I grow up," Charlie Andrews said. "I think skating is good because it inspires people, when they fall, not stay down, trying to get back up."
While kids were concentrating on having fun jumping and sliding up and down hills on their wheels, parents wanted to make sure their kids were safe.
"You always wanna make sure they wear a helmet, get elbow pads, knee pads," Tom Whelihan, Brady's dad, said. "And risk cards if you're doing it the first time."
The Tiger Pilot Club gave away 67 free helmets at the Skate Park to help protect skateboarders like Brady. The group has been fund raising for days to have the helmets ready for the event.
Go Skateboarding Day is an annual event hosted by the Columbia Parks and Recreation with sponsorships from Small Time Skates, Tiger Pilot Club and Youth Community Coalition this year.
