MEXICO - On June 3rd residents voted to create a new ambulance district. On Tuesday, there was a special election for the board of directors to lead it.

The turnout was sparse because candidates in three of the six districts ran unopposed.

A spokesman for the Audrain Medical Center said it plans to end its ambulance service by the time the new district is fully operational. This does not mean Mexico will be without ambulance service.

"It means providing a needed service that's in question up at the hospital now. It's a much needed service and I think we need to do what we can as board members to provide a good service and be good stewards to taxpayer money," said Bob Larkin, the unopposed candidate from the second district.

"Over the past fifteen to twenty years, the ambulance service of Audrain Medical Center has not really turned a profit. It's really a cost that is borne by the hospital in order to provide ambulance services," said Director of Business Development David Buhr.

After the board members are elected and sworn in, they will begin work to make the ambulance district completely operational.
