KANSAS CITY - Barack Obama met with a group of unhappy American Airlines employees Tuesday to discuss the economy.
Part of Senator Obama's message of change is for America to invest in renewable energy.
"It's the main thing that's gonna keep this airplane flying and keep these jobs right here in the United States as we start developing a whole series of plans to start a clean energy future," Obama said.
He says part of that investment in clean energy is using Americans' tax dollars better than the Bush administration.
"We're spending $10 billion in Iraq a month," Obama added.
Some airline workers are skeptical of Obama's plan but are hopeful it will pay off. Following an American Airlines announcement that it may cut 600 jobs at the Kansas City facility, the workers came out to see what Senator Obama says he can do to save middle class jobs.
"I'm glad he's here, it's kinda coincidental after a layoff announcement," according to airline employee Robert McCrary. "Everything's positive, the numbers could change."
And after 23 years of service, those numbers may cost him his job.
"I'm 41. I have a wife and kids and it's been tough but we're doing ok," said McCrary.
Workers like McCrary came out to hear about a change for middle class workers that Obama says his campaign can provide.
"We're gonna give a tax break to 95 percent of American families. The average families sitting here will receive an extra thousand dollars a year in tax relief," said Obama.
Protecting workers safety and health care was also major areas of focus. As was protecting workers retirement investments by increasing income taxes on the wealthy.
