COLUMBIA - The Honor Flight sends World War II veterans to see their Memorial at no cost to them.
The first Central Missouri Honor Flight leaves from the Holiday Inn Executive Center at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. They'll ride a bus to St. Louis, and fly out to see the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. 35 veterans will go on the Honor Flight Tuesday.
Although another 35 fly out in two weeks, more than 70 WWII veterans are still on a waiting list.
As a preview to Tuesday's flight, a large crowd gathered Sunday to enjoy some food. The Ag Sig and Delta Tau Delta fraternities hosted the community to raise money for another Honor Flight.
At today's event, WWII veterans chatted with college students about everything from being a POW to the Battle of the Bulge. Honor Flight organizers say they're ready for the first flight.
"The first one is always the toughest. Obviously, a lot of logistic issues for these folks, dealing with oxygen needs on an aircraft, and wheelchairs, and those sorts of things, but we've got that all worked out. We're excited about it, they're excited about it, we can't wait for Tuesday morning, and we'll get these people off the ground," Steve Paulsell said.
No word yet on how much money Sunday's event raised. It costs about $300 to send one veteran to Washington, D.C.
If you can't afford it, you can still be a part of the Honor Flight on Tuesday. Bring a photo of a WWII veteran to the departure, and the Honor Flight team will deliver the photo to the Memorial in Washington, free of charge.
