COLUMBIA - Columbia Firefighters were called at 2:24 p.m. on Thursday to Columbia Regency Trailer Park at 2701 East Nifong Blvd., Lot 190 to inspect a reported structure fire.
When firefighters arrived they observed light smoke coming from the home. Fire crews entered and discovered a small fire in the front bedroom, which they quickly extinguished. The home, owned by Dawn Bryant, sustained only minor smoke damage and the damage is estimated at $2,500.
Catherine Prall, the occupant, reported that she was watching television when she saw smoke filling the home. She then discovered the fire, evacuated and called 9-1-1 for fire department assistance. There were no working smoke detectors installed in the home.
A visitor to a nearby home, Randy Jones, entered the home to assist Prall when he saw the smoke coming from the home. When he discovered the fire he used pans of water and a garden hose to control the fire until the firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
The American Red Cross is providing emergency housing assistance to the occupants.
