BOONE COUNTY - Gregory Warren Morton, 40 was arrested Friday morning on charges of the first-degree-murder of a Columbia man.

The Boone County Sheriff's Department found the remains of 39-year-old Mitchell Wayne Kemp who had been missing since 2004. Kemp's body was in a shallow grave on property that was previously owned by Morton.

St. Louis authorities arrested Morton at his place of employment as a suspect in the homicide shooting of Kemp at 9:00 a.m. He was transported to Boone County where his bond was set at $1 million.

A family member contacted Boone County Police on February 14 after not having heard from Kemp since the summer of 2004. After multiple out-of-state interviews police concluded the murder occurred on property previously owned by Morton on Deer Park Road near Three Creeks State Park in Columbia.

In February, the family said they found out about Kemp's murder over the Internet. That is when they contacted the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

"In mid-February we learned of this through a family member.  An extensive investigation began.  We did all of the necessary groundwork to make sure through all the national databases to make sure this individual wasn't still living," said Dwayne Carey, Boone County Sheriff.

Kemp's remains were discovered on August ninth and were confirmed by DNA analysis. An autopsy was performed on August 12 and has determined the death was a homicide shooting.

If you have any information about this case please contact the Detective Unit of the Boone County Sheriff's Department at 875-1111, or CrimeStoppers at 875-TIPS (8477) or at 875tips.com.
