COLUMBIA- The school board has to make major decisions in the next month and a half to fix its budget problems.

The list of cuts was refined on Thursday morning leaving room for discussion. Teachers were the main topic today. Especially how to help morale in the classroom. The board reviewed its current budget proposal, it made no changes, but it did discuss the need to help talk to the district's teachers about the millions of dollars it needs to cut.

Rockbridge High School biology teacher Kerri Graham says she has a passion for her students. But with the recent recommendations for budget cuts, she says she feels a huge drop in morale among her peers.

"We work really hard, and we want to do what's best for students and we hope that the community and the central administration recognizes that, and we don't make a lot of money and just small recognition is important for us,"said Graham.

Assistant superintendent Lynn Barnett thinks communication is key.

"I think with further openness, like has been going on truly for the past year with all the input we've given teachers with there, I think their feeling more comfortable visiting with the administration as well as the board of education," stated Barnett.

But Graham is still not completely at peace.

"There's I think a sense of uncertainty right now, among teachers as to where is our district and it's definitely in flux, in what's going to be, and what's going to happen in the future," explained Graham.

The board must complete its first draft of the 2008-2009 budget by June 9th. It may approve a final version as soon as June 19th. The board must approve the budget by the end of next month. For a comprehensive list of all the reductions, click on the the link above.
