HERMANN - State officials are warning the city they must clean up the land around the Hermann Municipal Airport.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says a trench next to the runway is a dumping ground without state approval.

Jason Moellinger keeps his plane at the airport and said he's unhappy with the site.

"If I'm doing business, it's an embarrasment because it looks terrible. There's piles of glass there and boards, concrete, construction waste..." Moellinger said.

The DNR has given the city until April to clean up the mess. Moellinger said, however, the dump is more than just an eyesore.

"Not only the environment but the farmers down here in the bottoms, when the flood waters come up and those glass bottles float around and get in the fields, it's terrible," Moellinger said.

The airport committee chairman said he thought the city was just trying to fill the trench to prevent flooding, but DNR says it understands the trench is just a dumping place.

KOMU 8 tried to contact city officials for comment, however, the city clerk said the mayor is out of the country and Public Works Director Ric Palmer didn't return phone calls.
