COLUMBIA - PETA recognizes the two girls responsible for the humane society's million-dollar makeover.

PETA has chosen 13-year-old Amanda Huhman and Libby Burks for its 'Compassionate Kid' Award. Each girl will receive a framed certificate, T-shirt, and other 'goodies' from the organization.

"Amanda and Libby have shown a degree of compassion, determination, and know-how far beyond their years," PETA vice president Daphna Nachminovitch said in a release. "Their act of kindness will bring some much-needed sunshine into the often-dreary lives of homeless animals for many years to come."

In late April, the online community ZooToo declared the local Central Missouri Humane Society winners of a national shelter makeover contest worth up to $1 million. The two girls headed the campaign with fliers, radio spots, and numerous community events.

The humane society plans to use the money for a new ventilation system, more space for animals, and infrastructure improvements.
