JEFFERSON CITY- Gov. Jay Nixon previews upcoming budget cuts for 2009 in his State of the State address Tuesday night.

In a press conference before the State of the State speech, Gov. Nixon called for more than $170 million in budget cuts. He also plans to maintain many state-run programs.

The deepest cuts will come from capitol improvements, including road and construction projects. Those cuts could be close to $70 million.

Social services will lose $46 million . No cuts will be made to core Medicaid programs.

Public safety will see $13 million cut from its budget. State troopers will not be cut.

Higher education, as promised, did not see cuts, but elementary and secondary education will lose $5 million. The government will maintain foundation formula programs and increase the First Steps program.

A large portion of the budget comes from the federal stimulus package. According to budget offers, Missouri could get more than $800 million.

Also, the budget calls for more than 1,300 state job cuts.
