COLUMBIA - As Hurricane Gustav makes landfall, Gulf Coast evacuees land in Columbia.

While nearly two million people fled northward away from Hurricane Gustav, only a few have arrived in mid-Missouri.

Columbia's Calvary Baptist Church Shelter House on Ridgeway Avenue can hold up to 100 evacuees. Originally 200 evacuees were expected to fly into Columbia on Sunday.

But FEMA decided to no longer evacuate those Gulf Coast families to Missouri.

The mid-Missouri chapter of the Red Cross decided to open the shelter in Columbia as planned after receiving word that 13 self-evacuees are headed to the area.

The Red Cross stocked hundreds of bottles of water and gatorade, along with comfort kits donated by Target, containing toiletries. Sandwiches and icees filled the refrigerators, and more food is on the way.

On Sunday, Columbia shelters stood down when government chartered busses loaded with evacuees were directed elsewhere, but at noon Monday, the Church Shelter was activated.

"This morning, early, we received word of self evacuees that were coming into the area. We made the decision shortly after noon to activate the shelter that we have here in Columbia," said Mike Odneal of the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross said it's doing okay on volunteers, but if the number of evacuees increases in the next few days, volunteers can call 211 to help.
