COLUMBIA- At 6'7" and well over 300 pounds, Dan Hoch is the biggest Tiger on the Mizzou football team. In this week's edition of Blumberg Off The Bench, find out why Hoch might also be the smartest Tiger on the team, at least in one particular subject.
Dan Hoch is entrenched as Missouri's right tackle on the offensive line. Last season Gary Pinkel made Hoch his ever first true freshman to play for the coach, but Hoch has plenty of other skills that make him rare. Hoch is 6'7", 320 pounds of road grating offensive lineman.
"He's a great blocker outside on the edge. He's always coming around especially on our counter play and always blowing somebody up. I'm running right off him. I love it," running back Derrick Washington said.
But, football isn't his only skill. Hoch has a way with numbers.
"Elementary school we did a flash card game, Around the World. I was always trying to get quick with the numbers. Single digit numbers, just competing," said Hoch.
His only competition now is a calculator. Hoch can do long division and multiplication, all in his head.
"I remember one time I gave him a problem. I was just trying to make up some stuff and I did it on a calculator. He had it right. Had the decimal right, it was crazy. I didn't believe it. I said, 'Dan, how are you like this?'" said Washington.
Washington is not the only Tiger to quiz Hoch.
"We'll say Dan, 'What's 45 times 38?' And he'll shoot out the number real fast. He loves to do it, too. He's like give me another one," said Weatherspoon.
"I said we have a walking calculator on our team," said Washington.
So I put Hoch to the test. Let's see if he can do more than block.
"15 times 22 is 330. 68 times 15, that's gonna be 1,020," said Hoch.
Hoch took Calculus Three last year, as a freshman.
"He took MU's hardest math class. Where the class average is an F, and he got an A in it. So, that's amazing," said Weatherspoon.
He's moved onto more challenging math, currently taking Non-Euclidean geometry.
"Most people in most classes don't recognize me as a football player 'cause those people are really smart. They do a lot of time on the books than looking around at football players," said Hoch.
Don't worry Hoch, it's always better when an offensive lineman goes unnoticed. Now he just needs a nickname.
"The Calculator. That will be funny man," Weatherspoon said.
Hoch says he want to go into Education Administration possibly as an athletic director or maybe a superintendent.
Hoch is from Harlan, Iowa and originally committed to Nebraska before changing his mind and coming to Missouri.
