JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- For the first time in 14 years, fewer than 1,000 people will die in Missouri traffic accidents. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 958 people died in traffic accidents this year, as of Friday morning. Barring a catastrophic final few days, Missouri is likely to record its fewest fatalities since 949 people died in 1993. The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety set a goal three years ago to reduce the state's traffic fatalities below 1,000 by the end of 2008. It appears that goal will be met a year early.
