COLUMBIA - Former Missouri football wide receiver Tommy Saunders has been charged with 2nd Degree Assault after reportedly striking a man in the head outside of Tonic Night Club on Friday.

Saunders is currently a volunteer coach on the Tiger football team. He is a former walk-on and served as a team captain in 2008.

Saunders has volunteered at the Columbia "Big Brothers, Big Sisters" program since his freshman, year of college five years ago.

Executive Director of the Columbia "Big Brothers, Big Sisters", Georga Luswoboda says, "Tommy's a great guy, not only has he volunteered for us, but he has taken that extra step, especially this fall, he has been working with me, and the United Way, with getting the word out about Big Brothers Big Sisters as one of the agencies of the United Way."

When asked how she reacted to the news of Saunders arrest Luswoboda replied, "I was shocked, and I know there must be another story."

Tonic Night Club managers declined to talk with KOMU.
