FULTON - A new grocery store opened its doors in Fulton Wednesday, and it's not the only new business in town.

The grocery store is a part of the Fulton business boom.

The opening of a grocery store doesn't usually generate a lot of attention. The opening of a C&R Market solidifies the renaissance of the south side of Fulton.

C&R Markets opened for business Wednesday, and "It's been busy busy busy," according to store manager Chris Hays.

This is the first grocery store in the south end of Fulton in eight years.

Many shoppers are excited because the new store is close to their homes. Nancy Lewis of the Chamber of Commerce knew there was a demand for a grocery store in that part of town, but the land was tied up.

"The land was in a trust, and there were investors who didn't really understand the necessity of moving," said Lewis.

But now that the land is free, business is booming.

"It's exciting because this side of town is building up," Lewis said. "A year ago it was just a field."

Alongside the new market are a department store that opened Tuesday, a new movie theater, and a lumberyard.

The city expected the area to grow, so it expanded Highway 54 earlier this year. The new market also means 60 new jobs.

For many the best part about the business boom is having a convenient place to buy groceries.

The Chamber of Commerce says more developments will be coming to the south end of Fulton soon.

Lewis says with Fulton's growth, there is definitely a demand for more businesses in that area.
