JEFFERSON CITY - A Wal-Mart in Jefferson City is now allowing the Salvation Army's "Angel Tree".

Major Kendall Mathews, the Regional Director of the Salvation Army, said the manager at the Walmart in this location got corporate to host the angel tree. Mathews says the manager decided to talk to coorporate after much community pressure.

Tuesday, a Wal-Mart spokesperson said not allowing the angel tree was because of a space issue.

Major Mathews put up the angel tree in Wal-Mart Wednesday morning.

An Angel Tree is filled with tags and is put up in a business . The tags include the age and gender of a child, as well as any other specific information. People can take the tags and get a gift for the child that coincides with the tag.

Major Mathews says the Angel Tree program will be needed more this year in the difficult economy. Mathews says he is confident the community will step up to compensate for the greater need.

Several groups have been stepped up to provide trees for the 250 tags that Wal-Mart usually supplies. Pizza Hut, the medical community and churches have all begun donating tags. On Tuesday the Salvation Army got committments to provide space for 121 tags.
